The chopper went down vicinity BS727808 with seven personnel on board: LTC Barker Battalion Commander, CPT Michles Battalion S-2, LT Phillips the Artillery Liaison Officer with Aircraft Commander and Co Pilot and the 2 gunners. At 1850hrs as much of the chopper and 02 pilots bodies as possible have been removed more data available.

Delta Company sent troops to check for body, they found 1 US body KHA from Chi Com Hand Grenade body was ID as a member of Alpha Battery 6-11 Artillery, they don’t know how long he had been dead. At 1455hrs 11th Brigade S-2 reference journal # 13 man that was found KHA this morning was Charlie Battery 6-11 Artillery not Alpha Battery 6-11 Artillery after investigation they found man had stepped on a mine, no one knew what he was doing out on the road or what time he stepped on mine.

Advance Party to secure and prepare location under ground attack and RTO wounded, Bob sacrificed himself for the RTO by advancing to a secondary fire position. He was mortally wounded by AK47 round. My friend John Michitsch (now,1999, a Major General) identified Bob after med-evac to Duc Pho. Bob was a red haired good ole boy from Oklahoma. He was recommended for Medal of Honor by downgraded to Silver Star. A fine young Man, Thursday, February 11, 1999 reported by William Hoagland Alpha Battery Commander.

For two US WHA with multiple frag wounds of head, chest and shoulders, at this grid 760360. The Common Post group with D-41 found (4) 6’ X 9’ camouflaged hootches located along the trail vicinity BS765355. Common Post group consisting of CO, Arty FO, Arty FO and 4.2 FO entered the first three hootches. A scout dog handler observed the Common Post group inside the hootch searching through a basket. There was a hand grenade in basket with pin pulled out partially and exploded when material was lifted from grenade, appeared that materials in basket was clothing and papers. Results 3 US KHA CAPT JAMES ROBERT FOWLER, 1LT RICHARD GEORGE GARDNER (Charlie Battery 6-11 Artillery) died prior to Dust Off. PFC FRED DUANE LARSON (Charlie Battery 6-11 Artillery) was killed instantly, LISTED AS KHA and 4.2 FO SP4 Ronald Primavera (Echo Company) WHA time of incident 1210hrs and attached to the 91st Evac Hospital.

At 0955hrs UPDATE Bravo Company 3rd Platoon at 0825hrs vicinity BS782344 set off booby trap of 155mm round with several small arms rounds attached, at the time was securing LZ. Dust Off was requested at 0827hrs completed at 0844hrs and 0850hrs. The 3rd Dust Off requested at 1038hrs and was completed at 1055hrs by Command and Control Helicopter brought them to LZ San Juan for a total of 8 KHA and 8 WHA. Vehicle was from 3-11 Artillery and was a 2 ½ ton truck. Dust Off 53 and 54 is on station and 1st Dust Off completed at 1550hrs, 3rd Dust Off completed at 1508hrs. Mine was 35 to 45 pounds of plastic charge (no wires) pressure release maybe timed on south side of Access road, threw truck 25 meters over sending 3 people clear and pinning 2. Crater was 15’ in diameter and 8’ deep, 2 KIA and 3 WIA. Legend is 1st Platoon 54-59, 2nd Platoon 64-99, 3rd Platoon 04-09, 4th Platoon 34-39, CO-21. 1KIA with Charlie Battery 6-11 Artillery reports NON-HOSTILE, GROUND CASUALTY VEHICLE CRASH at Base of LZ Liz Truck accident. At 1545hrs 1-20 Infantry and Charlie Battery 6-11 Artillery: 1-20 Infantry had a 2 ½ ton going north and Charlie Battery 6-11 Artillery going south when a head on collision occurred between the two vehicles, vicinity BS742520. Apparently Artillery vehicle swerved to the left to miss some Vietnamese children, then to the right and back to the left in front of the deuce and a half. All wreckage was on East Side of the road. Results were 1 US Red Leg KIA who was in the right seat of ¾ ton, 4 US Red legs WIA, and 2 US Dog Handlers WIA, Dust Off to Chu Lai.
